Tummy Tucks (officially, abdominoplasty) are done for several reasons.  Most people who present with a desire for a "tummy tuck" do so because of sagging or overlapping skin in the lower abdomen.  Another reason to have an abdominoplasty is poor skin quality from stretch marks, scarring from previous procedures or any other unsightly skin issue.  The third reason is when there is overlapping or skin issues in the upper abdomen, above the umbilicus.  The fourth reason would be for someone who gains a large percentage of their weight in the pannus or lower abdominal area and wants it removed.  These procedures can be done alone, or in conjunction with other Cosmetic procedures.  Some common procedures combined with tummy tuck are breast augmentation or lift, liposuction, and some facial procedures.

A tummy tuck is done by making an incision around the belly button and from hip to hip.  The skin in the lower abdomen is removed, along with the fatty tissue, and the remaining skin in the upper abdomen is stretched to close the defect.  The muscles are also tightened beneath.  This allows the skin from the upper abdomen which is usually free of stretch marks to cover the abdomen getting rid of scars, stretch marks, and overlapping skin.

We place a drain which helps the skin stick down in its new position and removes any excess fluid.  It stays in place for a minimum of 1 week or until the drainage is below 15-20cc in 24 hours.

We use all absorbable suture so there is none to be removed. The only visible suture is the one holding in the drain.  Liposuction is often times combined with a tummy tuck.  It is included in the waist area and many want liposuction of the hips or love handles.

We like for you to stay slightly bent at the waist for the first week after surgery and straighten after. 

Down time from a tummy tuck is usually about 2 weeks depending on the type of work you do.  We also like for you to take great care for 6 weeks with the actual wound.

Tummy tucks are a very satisfying procedure.  Women can often re-gain the figure they had before giving birth and fit into normal clothes again.  Bothersome stretch marks in the lower abdomen are not improved.....they are gone!!
